Common Questions

What is vaccination care?

Vaccination care is about giving your pet lasting protection against preventable illnesses. Vaccines safely prepare their immune system to fight off harmful viruses and bacteria before they cause trouble. It’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your pet healthy, active, and part of your life for years to come.

Vaccines help prevent the following types of diseases in pets:

  • Rabies
  • Canine Distemper
  • Canine Parvovirus
  • Canine Influenza
  • Leptospirosis
  • Feline Leukemia
  • Feline Panleukopenia

Why vaccinating your pet is important?

Vaccines are a simple way to keep your pet safe and healthy. They protect against preventable diseases and help your dog or cat live a longer, happier life.

Here’s why vaccinations matter:

  • Protect against serious illness: Vaccines stop diseases like rabies, distemper, and parvovirus in dogs, and feline leukemia and FVRCP in cats.
  • Prevent the spread of infectious diseases: A vaccinated pet is a safer playmate for everyone. Whether they visit a boarding facility, a dog park, or simply meet other pets in the neighborhood, staying up to date helps keep everyone safe.
  • Immune system support: Vaccines teach your pet’s immune system how to recognize and fight off certain diseases. It’s like giving them a head start so they can stay stronger and healthier throughout their life.
  • Protection for young animals: Puppies and kittens don’t have fully developed immune systems yet, which makes them more vulnerable to illness. Vaccinations give them the protection they need while they’re still growing.
  • Protection from zoonotic diseases: Some vaccines (like the rabies vaccine) don’t just protect your pet. They also keep your family safe from diseases that can spread between animals and people.
  • Give peace of mind: Knowing your pet is protected means you can relax and enjoy your time together. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in your pet’s health and your confidence as a pet parent.
What are the “core” vaccines for dogs or cats?

Every pet’s vaccination needs are a little different, but some vaccines are considered “core” because nearly every pet benefits from them. They’re a key part of preventive care for pets and help protect against serious illness.

Here are the ones that Modern Animal recommends for your pet’s safety:

Core Vaccines for Dogs:

  • DAPP: Protects against distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza, and parvovirus, which are highly contagious viruses that affect overall health.
  • Leptospirosis: Guards against bacteria found in water and wildlife that can damage the kidneys and liver.
  • Rabies: This vaccine is required by law in most states and is essential for protecting pets and people from a fatal disease.
  • Bordetella: Helps prevent kennel cough, a common respiratory infection among social dogs.

Core Vaccines for Cats:

  • FVRCP: Protects against common feline respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses.
  • FeLV: Prevents Feline Leukemia Virus, which weakens the immune system.
  • Rabies: Protects against a fatal virus that can spread through bites or scratches.

Your Modern Animal veterinarian will guide you through the timing and frequency of boosters for each vaccine and make sure your pet’s schedule stays up to date in the app.

Some pets may also need a few extra vaccines depending on their daily life. If your dog visits boarding facilities, plays at the park, or joins you on outdoor adventures, their Modern Animal vet may recommend Canine Influenza or Leptospirosis for added protection.

How much do vaccinations cost?

We believe great care should never come with surprises. Before any vaccine is given, your veterinarian will walk you through what’s recommended, outline the costs clearly, and answer your questions so you feel confident about every step.

Vaccination care: how to support your pet at home after a vaccine?

After your pet’s vaccination, it’s common for them to feel a little tired or tender for a short while. Most mild side effects appear within a few hours and fade within a day or two. This is a normal sign that your pet’s immune system is responding just as it should.

But just as a precaution, you should know what this might look like:

  • Mild swelling or warmth where the vaccine was given
  • Slight tiredness or extra rest
  • A temporary decrease in appetite
  • A low-grade fever
  • Light sneezing or coughing after intranasal vaccines

These mild reactions usually go away on their own and don’t require treatment. To help your pet feel comfortable, make sure they have a quiet place to rest, plenty of water, and gentle reassurance from you.

If your pet’s symptoms last longer than 48 hours, or you notice signs like swelling, vomiting, or trouble breathing, reach out as soon as possible.
