Common Questions
When something suddenly feels off with your pet, urgent care gives you a way to act quickly and get answers. It’s there for the in-between moments when it’s not an emergency, but waiting doesn’t feel right.
Here’s why urgent care is important:
- Prompt attention: When your pet is sick or injured, quick evaluation and treatment can prevent complications and support faster healing.
- Early detection of Issues: Acting at the first sign of a problem helps identify underlying issues before they progress, keeping your pet healthy and comfortable.
- Smarter decisions: On-site diagnostic testing and same-day visits help your veterinarian find answers fast and start treatment right away.
- Reducing emergencies: Many urgent visits help avoid late-night emergency trips by addressing problems early and preventing them from escalating.
Peace of mind: Knowing you can reach a veterinarian for same-day or next-day care, or even connect virtually anytime, helps you stay calm and confident when your pet needs attention.
You know your pet better than anyone. If they seem quieter than usual, refuse food, or just don’t feel like themselves, it’s okay to trust that instinct. Urgent care is meant for those times when your pet needs to be seen soon, even if it isn’t an emergency.
You can bring your pet to urgent care if you notice:
- Vomiting or diarrhea that lasts longer than a day
- Refusal to eat or drink
- Limping, minor wounds, or visible swelling
- Eye redness, discharge, or squinting
- Coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge
- Itching, rashes, or shaking their head
- Straining to urinate or sudden accidents indoors
Go to emergency care right away if your pet:
- Has trouble breathing
- Is bleeding heavily or has a major injury
- Cannot stand, move, or respond to you
- Has seizures or suddenly collapses
- May have eaten something toxic or dangerous
If you’re an Essential or All Access member, our 24/7 Virtual Care team is here to listen and guide you. They can help you decide whether to come in for urgent care, visit an emergency hospital, or safely monitor your pet at home.
While you’re keeping an eye on your pet or waiting for your visit, a few small actions can help them stay comfortable and calm:
- Create a peaceful space: Choose a quiet, cozy spot where your pet can rest without too much activity around them. Offer water and let them relax at their own pace.
- Stick to what’s prescribed: Only give medications that your pet’s Modern Animal veterinarian has recommended. Even over-the-counter or human medicines can be harmful.
- Watch for changes: Take note of how your pet is eating, drinking, and behaving. Small shifts can tell your pet’s vet a lot about what’s going on.
- Track symptoms: If your pet is vomiting, limping, or coughing, jot down when it started and how it’s changed. These details can help your pet’s vet diagnose and treat them more effectively.
- Stay calm: Pets often take their cues from you. A calm tone and gentle reassurance can make a stressful moment much easier for both of you.
And remember, you’re never on your own. If you notice symptoms or you feel like something’s off, you can book same-day or next-day urgent care appointments at any Modern Animal clinic. If you’re a Modern Animal member, you can also access our 24/7 Virtual Care through chat, phone, or video call for help and peace of mind between visits.
When your pet suddenly isn’t feeling like themselves, getting help should feel simple, not overwhelming. Modern Animal makes that possible with same-day and next-day urgent care that gives you quick access to a caring veterinary team you already know and trust.
Our veterinarians bring years of experience in urgent care and take the time to understand what’s causing your pet’s pain or discomfort. From unexpected stomach issues to minor injuries or changes in behavior, we’re here to help your pet feel better, faster, and with less stress for you both.
When your pet gets sick or injured, waiting for a standard appointment isn’t an option. Urgent care is designed for those unexpected situations when your pet needs veterinary care soon but isn’t in immediate, life-threatening danger.
Some of the most common concerns that fall under urgent care include:
- Vomiting or diarrhea that doesn’t resolve or causes dehydration
- Limping, swelling, or minor injuries
- Eye or ear irritation, redness, or discharge
- Allergic reactions, hot spots, hives, or sudden skin issues
- Changes in urination or bathroom habits
- Mild breathing trouble, coughing, or sneezing
At Modern Animal, urgent care is built around compassion and clarity. When something feels off with your pet, you can book a same-day or next-day visit through our app, and we’ll be ready for you when you arrive. Our team takes the time to listen, assess what’s going on, and make sure your pet is comfortable throughout the process.
Depending on your pet’s needs, your veterinarian might recommend additional testing or treatments to help find the cause and get them feeling better quickly. That may include:
- Diagnostic testing such as bloodwork, urinalysis, or x-rays to identify what’s happening beneath the surface
- Wound care and suturing for cuts, scrapes, or minor injuries
- Treatment for infections or allergic reactions that need timely attention
- Pain management and short-term monitoring to keep your pet comfortable and stable
- Virtual follow-up and care coordination through the Modern Animal app, so you can easily stay connected after your visit
Every plan is personalized to your pet’s needs and supported by easy follow-up through the Modern Animal app.
