How does virtual care work alongside the in-clinic experience?

As a digital extension to the in-clinic experience, the Modern Animal app gives you the ability to chat with or video call a staff member of our Modern Animal Care team, 24/7. Our team is here to assist with any questions. Please note: if you are concerned that your pet is in distress, please seek care at the nearest emergency facility immediately.

Who has access to 24/7 Virtual Care, and much does it cost?

At Modern Animal, we keep our pricing transparent and simple, so you don’t have to worry about hidden costs or complex fee structures. You can get the benefit of our 24/7 virtual care services if you have a Modern Animal membership. If you’re not already a member, you can choose from these two plans to access ongoing care.

  • All Access Membership: This is a great plan for young pets as well as senior cats and dogs. You’ll pay $199/year if you’re in Colorado or California ($169/year in Texas). You then get unlimited clinic visits and 24/7 virtual care support over chat, phone, or video. Your pet also gets urgent care on priority. 
  • Essential Membership: If you have a low-maintenance pet that requires regular veterinary care, this plan could be a great choice. You’ll pay $99/year if you’re in Colorado or California ($89/year in Texas). That gives you the option to use our 24/7 virtual care services for any concerns, plus one complementary clinic visit. 

To reach out to our round-the-clock virtual care team, simply choose the plan that works best for your pet’s needs and become a Modern Animal member. If you’d like to try our services before committing to a membership plan, we offer a pay-as-you-go option. You’ll only have to pay $85/exam ($75/exam in Texas), but keep in mind that it doesn’t cover virtual care for your pet. 

What is a VCPR, and why does it matter for Virtual Care?

A Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) is what allows a veterinarian to diagnose, treat, and prescribe safely. It starts with an in-person exam. Without it, we can still answer questions and guide you through next steps, but we can’t diagnose or prescribe. With an active VCPR, Virtual Care can support a much wider range of concerns and help you avoid unnecessary visits.

Why is Virtual Care Important?

Virtual care matters because it may not always be possible or required to bring your pet into the clinic for an exam. Here’s why it’s important to have this option:

  • Quick Answers for Small Concerns: Little things like a mild cough or some scratching don’t always need an in-clinic exam. But you’ll still want professional advice, and virtual care covers that. 
  • Anytime, Anywhere Support: Health concerns can occur at any time, no matter where you and your pet are. With our 24/7 virtual care, you can connect with a veterinary professional even at midnight or on weekends, no matter when questions pop up. 
  • Ongoing Veterinary Care: If your pet has a chronic condition like diabetes or is recovering from a surgery, virtual check-ins allow you to access ongoing care even without frequent trips to the clinic. 
  • Peace of Mind: Sometimes, you just need reassurance that your pet’s behavior or symptoms are normal. Modern Animal’s virtual care gives you this confidence when you’re worried about your dog or cat. 

What can I reach out to Virtual Care for?

We hope Modern Animal will be your first resource for any and all medical questions. Our virtual care team is here to help with general advice and behavior-related questions, or to provide clarity on the urgency of a health concern, 24 hours a day.

In all states where Modern Animal operates, the Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) must be established through an in-person examination before we can provide diagnosis and prescriptions over virtual care. That means your pet must have at least one in-person visit with Modern Animal and remain an active member. Virtual diagnosis will be advised only when medically appropriate and within an established VCPR.
