Common Questions

Why does Modern Animal perform dental cleanings under anesthesia?

At Modern Animal, all dental cleanings are performed under anesthesia to ensure your pet's safety and comfort while allowing our team to provide thorough, high-quality care. Anesthesia enables our doctors to comprehensively evaluate your pet's oral health, take X-rays to look for issues hiding below the gumline, and perform a full dental cleaning, polishing, and examination to check for hidden problems. This approach allows us to proactively address any issues found under the gumline before they worsen and lead to more serious problems like tooth pain, infection, or advanced periodontal disease.

What types of dental procedures does Modern Animal offer?

Modern Animal offers three levels of dental care depending on your pet's needs:

Routine Dental Cleaning is for pets with mild dental concerns, like early tartar buildup or minor gum inflammation. Intermediate Dental Cleaning and Treatment (with 4 or less extractions) is for pets with moderate dental disease, such as noticeable tartar or gum inflammation, and includes a more focused cleaning with some minor extractions. Advanced Dental Cleaning and Treatment (with 5 or more extractions) is for pets with more serious dental issues, like severe tartar buildup, loose teeth, or infection, and includes a deep cleaning, X-rays, and intensive treatment for advanced problems that may require multiple tooth extractions and treatment of gum infections.

How does Modern Animal keep my pet safe during dental procedures?

Modern Animal uses the most humane, advanced protocols to keep your pet safe and comfortable before, during, and after their dental treatment. Prior to your pet's procedure, we conduct pre-anesthetic bloodwork to ensure they can safely undergo anesthesia. Throughout their procedure, a dedicated nurse will continuously monitor vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, and oxygen levels. If any extractions are necessary, we use continuous pain control (CRI) and local anesthetic blocks to minimize use of gas anesthesia. This prevents complications and ultimately provides your pet with a smoother, pain-free recovery following their treatment.

How much do dental cleanings cost?

At Modern Animal, pricing is always clear and straightforward. The cost of a dental cleaning varies depending on the health of your pet's teeth, and whether they require tooth extractions to address oral disease.

Why is dental care important?

Healthy teeth do more than make your pet’s smile look good. They keep your pet feeling comfortable, eating well, and full of energy. Dental care prevents pain and infections that can affect not just the mouth, but the whole body.

Here’s why it matters:

  • Prevents tooth loss: Keeping gums and supporting structures healthy helps your pet hold onto their teeth as they age.
  • Avoids pain and discomfort: Dental disease can make chewing or even resting uncomfortable. Routine cleanings help your pet stay pain-free.
  • Keeps breath fresh: A clean mouth means fewer bacteria and fresher kisses.
  • Protects major organs: Oral bacteria can spread through the bloodstream, affecting the heart, liver, and kidneys.
  • Stops small problems early: Regular checkups help catch issues before they become serious or require extractions.

A little care now goes a long way in keeping your pet healthy, happy, and full of life.

What are some common dental issues in pets?

Some of the most common dental care issues in pets include:

  • Plaque and tartar buildup can irritate gums and lead to infection
  • Gingivitis caused by bacteria that inflame and weaken gum tissue
  • Tooth decay or fractures that make eating painful
  • Periodontal disease that damages the gums and bone supporting the teeth
  • Retained baby teeth that crowd adult teeth and cause misalignment

Regular dental checkups can help catch these problems early and keep your pet’s mouth healthy and pain-free.

Dental care: how to support your pet at home

Good dental care doesn’t stop after your visit to the Modern Animal clinic. You can help your pet maintain a healthy mouth between cleanings with simple daily habits:

  • Brush your pet’s teeth regularly using a soft brush and pet-safe toothpaste.
  • Offer dental chews or toys designed to reduce plaque buildup.
  • Schedule annual dental exams to keep track of changes and prevent issues early.
  • Watch for signs like bad breath, drooling, or changes in eating habits, and contact your veterinarian if you notice anything new.

If you’re unsure where to start, your Modern Animal care team can help you build a home dental routine that fits your pet’s needs and your lifestyle.

What should I expect on the day of a dental procedure?

Please arrive at the clinic promptly at the time of your scheduled drop-off. Patient intake will take about 10-15 minutes. After that, you can step away from the clinic and entrust your pet in Modern Animal's care for their dental procedure.

The actual start time of the dental cleaning may vary based on a few variables, so our Modern Animal team will communicate key updates and real-time progress via the in-app chat throughout the day. We will then coordinate a pick-up time with you individually, and discuss any dental care and discharge instructions.
